old backyard, again

View of my old house from the far end of the back yard. One day shortly before we started packing up, I ran around with my camera, documenting it from all different angles.

Griffin

I exposed the paper normally under the enlarger. After that I put the print in the developer briefly, then took it outside the darkroom for a second to solarize. But while it was solarizing, I kept my hand on the paper, so that's the only part of the picture that isn't solarized.

Joshe & Tuomas

I think this might be the only photo I've ever sepia toned. If there is a newborn baby in the picture, it is acceptable.

tire swing

It looks like he's hanged himself, but he's really just sitting on a tire swing with his head down. I made the print, cut out those little pieces, and mounted everything on a white board.

The Clearing session art

My current band is called The Clearing. Clare asked me, "Did you cut all the trees down?" Yes we did, if by "trees" you mean any sort of percussion or audio fidelity.

Here's all the cover art I've done so far for The Clearing practice sessions. You can hear Woods and Clearing songs here.

The Woods session art pt. two

My old band was called The Woods. We recorded all of our practice sessions. The image above is all the "cover art" I made for the sessions. All the images are from pictures I've taken. Some are straight, others are digitally messed-with.

I previously posted a bunch of Woods album art. I recently decided that a lot of them were super lame so I either punched them up a little, or made new ones entirely. I usually don't put a whole lot of thought into these. I just look for a picture that has something interesting going on that can be cropped into a little square. Either that or I take a random picture and Photoshop the daylights out of it until it looks cool. Sometimes I try to match the picture to the mood of the music, but more often than not I just stick the picture on there and hope it happens naturally. I'm pretty happy with this batch.

fireworks on the beach

A person with sparklers on the beach, 4th of July, 199something.

This roll of film was mistakenly put into the canister backwards by one of my photoclassmates, so the emulsion on the film was actually facing away from the lens of the camera. Nothing cool happened because of it, it just made the negatives thinner (i.e. underexposed) and harder to print. It's nice that they came out at all though.

Torche

During Torche's set at the Middle East Downstairs, 7/11/08.

Oddly enough, my friend Prifti did a portrait sitting with the moustachioed fellow on the far right, which you can see here (third row, first picture). It's part of a series of wet plate collodion pieces that he's been doing for a few years now. I really recommend checking out the rest of Prifti's site, he does some amazing stuff.

I got this effect by putting the exposed paper on a SpinArt machine (one of the best contraptions ever contrapted) and dripping developer on it while it spun round and round.

Epiphany

Even though no one in my family is particularly religious, about 10 years ago my grandmother decided we would start celebrating Epiphany every year. For a few years I thought she made this holiday up, but it turns out it actually is a real thing, which you can read about here. But whatever, all it means for us is that everyone brings their Christmas trees over to my grandparents' house, we eat some good food and everyone gets drunk, and then we stuff the trees one at a time into a metal trash can and light them on fire. Hey Christmas, way to be super lame. At least you're not Lent, I guess, so... there's that.

gasmask & broken hands

The gasmask is a 35mm negative. The hands are x-rays. The x-rays were laid on the photo paper and the negative printed through them. It's my broken hand. I broke a bone at the base of my thumb and had to have pins put in my hand to keep everything in place. Actually... at the emergency room the doctor just set it and put a cast on. When a different doctor checked it a week or two later, he said the first doctor was an idiot and had set it wrong. So then I had to have surgery, and THEN they put the pins in. Weeks later, when it was finally healed, the doctor took off my cast, had me put my hand on his desk, and pulled the pins out with a pair of pliers, WITHOUT ANESTHESIA. Don't ever break your hand.
